To Grandpa Steve

This weekend I went hiking and climbed the tallest peak in the Bay Area, Mount Diablo, and the peak next to it, Mount Olympia.  At 3,848' and 2,946', they aren't that high, but we ended up making it a 16 mile day.  The entire time, I kept thinking about Grandpa Steve: his sense of adventure and self-reliant attitude were grounded in a solid foundation of knowledge and experience.  I hope I'm learning like he did: by reading and by trial and error.

Getting higher!

We took a trail on the north side of the mountain, which is far less traveled than the other approaches.  It was cold when we set out: (43*!) but warmed up nicely.

Really, not that high....so we decided to keep going

Looking into the valley

This is particularly cool: it really shows how these mountains were formed by the tectonic plates, not by volcanoes.  The ground is really sandy: it used to be the ocean floor!

There is a dot on one of the peaks: it is a lighthouse that marks the summit of Mount Diablo.  We decided to hike the ridgeline over there and found online that it was about 1.5 miles.  Nope!  Closer to 3 and a really narrow trail at some points, but it was fun!

It was about 87* at the summit, which felt great!
This was pretty cheesy

Back in Oakland and it was 63*.  Thank you for the leg warmers, Mom!

All in all, I think it was a day Grandpa would have enjoyed. Xoxo
